In the last twenty years we have performed extensive development work in low field NMR relaxometry. This technology that is routinely used in logging, can be translated to provide valuable measurements of fluid properties of produced streams at various stages of oil production processes. The focus of the presentation is the demonstration of the capabilities of NMR in the measurement of fluid content in produced streams in the wellhead. We have proven both in the laboratory and in the field that NMR can be used as an excellent multi-phase cut meter. In addition to the individual phase content NMR can be used to measure the viscosity of the oil phase fairly accurately. Recently, it was demonstrated using diluted bitumen that both solvent content and mixture viscosity can be measured. Finally the first results on measurement of flow and cut are presented. Several publications were presented and patents were awarded.
In this presentation an overview of the technology, its potential applications and the main design principles for field application will be presented.
Apostolos Kantzas PhD (Waterloo), P. Eng., is the President and CEO of PERM Inc. (TIPM Lab) and PERM Instruments Inc. He works in solving EOR and reservoir characterization problems primarily in the WCSB. He runs a comprehensive laboratory in Calgary, conducting special and digital core analysis and EOR studies. He is the principal in the development of a series of magnetic resonance based sensors for multiphase metering in the field and the laboratory.
Apostolos is also a Professor at the University of Calgary, holder of a NSERC-AITF Industrial Research Chair in Modelling Fundamentals of Unconventional Resources as well as the President and CEO of the PERM Group of companies. He leads a research group that is involved in research related to problems of flow through porous media, oil and gas recovery, and pore level modelling. Dr. Kantzas is a member of APEGGA, SPE, CSChE, AIChE, CWLS and SCA. Dr. Kantzas has authored or co-authored over 400 technical papers and over 450 technical reports.
