Abstract:
Looking back on the past 20 years, the oil and gas industry has become considerably safer. We have developed and put in place some of the most advanced safety programs and are investing more time, effort and money in the health and safety of our people and the environment.  And ultimately, what difference is it making?

Evidence shows that serious injury and fatality rates are not achieving the consistent reduction shown in other injuries. Data from the UK (consistently one of the lowest work-related fatality countries) shows workplace fatality rates have been effectively constant since 2009.1 The recent move toward human performance-based safety, focussing on driving the empowerment and accountability of individuals is one way in which organizations are attempting to move the needle. It is known that to make good individual decisions, people need to see the full story. Data provides the source of that story.  As we move into the digital age it’s time to rethink how data and advanced analytics can help us monitor and proactively manage risk better. After all, our lives depend on it.

Advisian Digital, Worley’s data science, software and technology business, has combined forces with SaltGrid, a leading data science company, to create a cloud-based platform that applies artificial intelligence to Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) data, recognizing patterns and relationships that standard business intelligence does not, to predict the number and types of incidents likely to occur and allow asset operators to intervene.

The presenter will discuss power of predictive analytics and artificial intelligence for health and safety prevention in comparison to standard business analytics by showcasing recent project case studies where SaltGrid provided insights and outcomes standard business analytics could not. It demonstrates how predictive analytics strips out human bias, accurately predicts the nature and timing of upcoming incidents by highlighting key causes and contributing factors, and ultimately, it will demonstrate how it can help to improve overall HSE leadership by analysing training and other activities to identify which are most effective in preventing incidents.
