SAGD: It's Legacy, Innovations and Future
Currently about 1.5 million bpd of high viscosity oil is produced from Alberta and Saskatchewan through the SAGD process. Since its inception in 1969, the basic SAGD process continued to be the same with minor tweaks. However, tremendous technological evolutions happened in the operational components. At the beginning drilling dual horizontal well with 5m vertical separation was an uphill task. Artificial lift technologies went through many cycles of pilot testing. Optical fiber technology for monitoring temperature in the horizontal wellbore has evolved through many failures. Produced emulsion/water treatment was another critical challenge. Well completions along with FCD and ICD are still in the performance evaluation phase. Reservoir simulators have advanced significantly to handle field scale simulation and well completions optimization. For process improvement various solvent aided tests have been undertaken with mixed results. All of these aspects will be touched upon along with a few new technologies for future sustainable growth.
